Earache & Ear Discomfort
When it is wax pressing on the ear canal, and when it is something for your doctor.
Wax pressed hard against the ear canal or the eardrum can ache, itch, or make an ear feel tender and full.
Plenty of other things cause earache too — infection being the common one — and those need a doctor, not a wax appointment. An ear that is painful, hot, discharging, or that came on with a temperature should go to your GP or NHS 111 first.
If you are not sure which it is, ring and describe it. Being told it is not a job for her is a perfectly normal outcome of that phone call.
If an ear is painful, discharging, or the hearing dropped suddenly rather than gradually, speak to your GP or NHS 111 first. That is not a wax appointment.
