Ear Irrigation
The water method, using controlled low-pressure irrigation, where it is the right approach.
Irrigation uses a controlled flow of warm water to float the wax out. It is the older of the two methods and it is still the right one for some ears.
It is not suitable for everybody — a perforated eardrum, previous ear surgery, a grommet, or an ear that has had trouble after irrigation before all rule it out. That is decided at the appointment after looking in the ear, not over the phone.
If you have a preference either way, say so when you book.
If an ear is painful, discharging, or the hearing dropped suddenly rather than gradually, speak to your GP or NHS 111 first. That is not a wax appointment.
