Blocked Ear Treatment
The muffled, full, underwater feeling — and what can be done about it when it is wax.
A blocked ear is usually described the same way by everybody: muffled hearing, a feeling of fullness, your own voice sounding odd inside your head, sometimes a whistle from a hearing aid that was fine last week.
When the cause is wax, removing it deals with it. When it is not, no amount of wax removal will help — which is why the appointment starts by looking rather than by treating.
If the ear is painful, discharging, or the hearing dropped suddenly rather than gradually, speak to your GP or NHS 111 first. That is not a wax appointment.
